The Clanz - Alternate Earth Campaign Setting
Dwarves are the result of the last surviving Neanderthals, warped by the flux over multiple generations. Fleeing northwards and northeastwards and finding solace in the moutainous regions of Europe and Asia they transformed.
They turned into shorter, hardier and gruffer folk. The smaller the surface of the body, the more warmth it kept and required less oxygen. The extreme temperatures, rough ground and difficult climbs gave them a huge boost to the immune system and general toughness. They took up living in isolated communities in small caves and had to mine to expand. Often tribes would war over the scarce resources, creating an impatient and disturstful atmosphere. Also not being exposed to them much, dwarves are not used to commuicating in the human way. However their larger brain allows them to process senses faster as well as a long memory. This benefit does not manifest in mental acuity and inquisitiveness but the strong traditions have served them well enough to survive.
Low Light Vision
Accustomed to dark caves and darker mines a curious mutation developed in the eyes of most dwarves. Slightly larger eyes and a new set of cones give them the ability to see into the infrared spectrum. They lose the ability to see the deepest shades of purple and some blues however, so much human art confuses them. Luckily their heatvision is great for mining and dwarven art, sometimes dependant on temperature, appears bland and “too red” for humans.
